In the Mood for Mid Autumn Festival - Lantern Making

I remember making such lanterns in primary school when the Mid Autumn Festival is near. Now when I have all grown up, these childhood memories keep coming back to me and it was really great fun to do it together with my kids.

The easily excited family has set upon this important task of bringing on the mood of the Mid Autumn Festival to our home.

The following are the steps which we have taken admist watching an episode of "Leverage" on TV while holding a pair of scissors opened-mouth and attempting not to burn the sofa down with candles.

Ah yes, before we started, the to-be adult in the easily excited family commented,"Mum, besides glue and scissors, do you want to prepare a pail of water.... just in case?"

~~ Step 1 ~~

Geometrical Looking Lantern - Fold in as shown at one side of an A4 paper.
Cylindrical lantern - Skip this and the following step and go to step 3.
I used 120gsm construction paper.

~~ Step 2 ~~

Fold the paper as shown

~~ Step 3 ~~

Fold the paper in half and cut even strips as shown

~~ Step 4 ~~

Apply glue to the folded in part and paste the left side to the paper onto the folded in part.
Geometrical Looking Lantern - Form into a box shape.
Cylinderical Lantern - Form into cylindrical shape, skip step 5 and go to Step 6.

~~ Step 5 ~~

At the part when the 2 sides of the paper are pasted together, pinch and cut as shown below

~~ Step 6 ~~

Gently curl the stripes upwards

~~ Step 7 ~~

Add some decorations and a handle on it

~~ Step 8 ~~

Lit a tealight and place it into a cupcake holder. Put the lantern over it.

~~ Step 9 ~~
Repeat with different colors!
